Melanie’s practice focuses on business litigation with an especially heavy concentration on the representation of government entities at the state and local level. She capitalizes on her background in State government as a former deputy executive counsel which helps her understand the dynamic interplay between litigation and policy in order to execute strategies in the best interests of her government clients. Melanie is also experienced in handling litigation involving regulated industries, especially including the highly regulated coin operated amusement machine (COAM) industry.
Melanie is uniquely qualified in managing and advising on complex discovery disputes for both parties and nonparties in litigation. In one federal case, Melanie oversaw a two-year discovery phase involving over five million pages of documents and approximately 50 depositions. Melanie’s management of the case assisted in her client’s ultimate win on summary judgment, avoiding a costly and time-consuming trial.
In another case, Melanie’s defense of a key government witness on cross-examination in a high-profile election case brought by a voting rights group helped her client achieve a sweeping win in federal court on all counts.
Melanie regularly argues on behalf of her clients in both federal and state court, as well as in arbitration and administrative proceedings. In her first-year legal research and writing class in law school, she received the coveted Best Oralist Award in a mock appellate argument involving the in loco parentis doctrine. Melanie also interned with Justice Keith Blackwell of the Supreme Court of Georgia during law school.
Colleagues and clients value Melanie’s structured and organized approach to her cases, and her ability to maintain a calm and level-headed demeanor in tense and high-stress situations.
Prior to joining the Robbins Firm in 2020, Melanie was Deputy Executive Counsel for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for four years. In this role, Melanie advised on a wide range of regulatory and legislative matters and oversaw the agency’s open records policies. Melanie is experienced in all aspects of administrative law and regularly represented the Department in proceedings before the Office of State Administrative Hearings.
Currently she is a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the Camp Twin Lakes Junior Committee.
Melanie is an avid animal rescue advocate and novice tennis player. Outside of the office, she can be found volunteering with local animal shelters, refining her skills on the tennis court, or on the BeltLine with her rescue Boxer, Emmy.
